Jhiqui
Jhiqui is a Dothraki handmaid given to Daenerys Targaryen as a bride gift by her brother Viserys at her wedding to Khal Drogo. Along with Irri and Doreah, she becomes one of Daenerys's three constant attendants, responsible for her daily care, her education in Dothraki ways, and her physical preparation for the rituals of khaleesi life. She is copper-skinned, black-haired, and almond-eyed, a native of the Dothraki plains, and her knowledge of the horselords' language and traditions makes her indispensable to the young princess from across the narrow sea.
Role as Handmaid and Teacher
From the moment of the wedding, Jhiqui is assigned a specific duty: to teach Daenerys the Dothraki tongue. She is present during the long journey across the Dothraki sea, helping Daenerys adapt to the saddle, the food, and the customs of the khalasar. When Daenerys struggles with the raw stallion heart during the pregnancy ceremony before the dosh khaleen, Jhiqui has already prepared her by making her chew strips of dried horseflesh and drink bowls of half-clotted blood. She is the one who first notices the change in Daenerys's body after the dragon dream, asking if she is sick, and later, when Daenerys's pregnancy becomes apparent, it is Jhiqui who brushes the soft swell of her stomach and announces, "Khaleesi, you are with child." She also instructs Daenerys in the ancient Dothraki belief that the first man emerged from the lake called the Womb of the World, riding upon the first horse.
Witness to Crisis and Transformation
Jhiqui remains with Daenerys through the khalasar's disintegration after Khal Drogo's wound festers and his strength fails. When Drogo falls from his horse and lies delirious, Jhiqui is among those who help undress him and prepare the bath. She is present when Mirri Maz Duur performs the blood magic, and afterward, when Daenerys wakes from her fever, Jhiqui is the first to attend her, bringing water and stroking her brow. When Daenerys asks about her child, it is Jhiqui who delivers the news in a frightened whisper: "The boy… he did not live, Khaleesi." She is also among the handmaids who help Daenerys bathe and dress before she walks into Drogo's funeral pyre, and she is one of the first to kneel when Daenerys emerges from the flames with three newborn dragons, accepting her as the new leader of the remnant khalasar.
