Ogo

Khal Ogo was a Dothraki horselord who commanded his own khalasar, a nomadic horde of warriors, women, children, and slaves. He and his son, the khalakka Fogo, were present in Vaes Dothrak during the naming feast where Viserys Targaryen was crowned with molten gold, seated in a place of high honor beside Khal Drogo. Ogo's khalasar was one of several that had gathered in the sacred city, and he shared the high bench with Drogo and Khal Jommo, a sign of the temporary truce that held within sight of the Mother of Mountains.

Attack on the Lhazareen Town and Battle with Khal Drogo

Ogo's khalasar attacked a town of the Lhazareen, a peaceful herding people the Dothraki called the Lamb Men. The attack was brutal: Ogo's riders slaughtered the shepherds, wasted arrows on sheep, and set the town ablaze. They began the systematic rape and enslavement of the survivors. It was during this assault that Khal Drogo caught Ogo's khalasar. In the ensuing battle, Drogo personally slew Khal Ogo. When Ogo fell, his son Fogo became khal in his place, but Drogo killed him as well. Drogo's bloodriders cut the bells from the hair of both slain khals, and Drogo's every step thereafter rang louder than before, a mark of his increased prestige.

Consequences: Drogo's Wound and the Fall of the Khalasar

During the battle, Drogo was wounded. An arakh cut from one of Ogo's bloodriders sliced off Drogo's left nipple and left a deep gash on his chest. Though Drogo dismissed it as a scratch, the wound festered. The infection, exacerbated by Drogo's refusal to keep Mirri Maz Duur's poultice in place and his heavy consumption of poppy wine, ultimately proved fatal. Drogo's decline—his fever, his fall from his horse, and his descent into a vegetative state—directly led to the disintegration of his khalasar. The rival kos Pono and Jhaqo, seeing a khal who could not ride, declared themselves khals and led away the vast majority of Drogo's followers. The khalasar that had once numbered forty thousand was reduced to fewer than a hundred, leaving Daenerys Targaryen with only the old, the weak, the sick, and her own sworn khas. Ogo's attack, therefore, set in motion the chain of events that destroyed Drogo's power and forced Daenerys to forge a new path.
