Osha

Osha is a wildling woman from beyond the Wall, captured by Robb Stark and his men after a fight in the wolfswood near Winterfell. She is tall, lean, and hard, with a face weathered by a life of hardship. Unlike the other wildlings in her party, she is quick to surrender when the fight is lost, and she offers her service to Robb in exchange for her life. She becomes a servant in the kitchens at Winterfell, but her true value lies in her knowledge of the lands north of the Wall and the threats that dwell there.

Capture and Service at Winterfell

Osha is taken captive during a skirmish in the wolfswood, where she and a band of ragged men—deserters from the Night's Watch and wildlings—ambush Bran Stark while he is out riding. The attack is thwarted by Robb Stark, Theon Greyjoy, and the Stark direwolves, who kill most of the raiders. Osha, seeing the fight is lost, throws down her spear and begs for mercy. Robb spares her life, and she is brought back to Winterfell in chains. She is put to work in the kitchens, under the watch of the cook, Gage. Her irons are eventually struck off, though she continues to wear shackles on her ankles as a sign that she is not yet fully trusted.

Osha is a source of practical, unsentimental knowledge about the lands beyond the Wall, a perspective that contrasts sharply with the sheltered views of the southern-born characters. She speaks of giants, the children of the forest, and the white walkers as real, present dangers, not as legends. She tells Bran that the old gods of the north are the only gods, and that the weirwoods can hear prayers. She warns that the cold winds are rising and that men who go out from their fires sometimes come back as wights, with blue eyes and cold black hands. She tries to warn Robb that he is marching the wrong way—that his swords should go north, not south—but he does not listen.

Attendant to Bran Stark

After Bran's fall and the departure of his father and brothers for war, Osha becomes one of his most reliable attendants. She is strong and uncomplaining, willing to carry him where Hodor will not go. When Bran wants to visit the crypts to look for his father in a dream, it is Osha who carries him down the steep steps. She is present when Maester Luwin is attacked by Shaggydog in the crypts, and she helps bandage the maester's wounds. She speaks to Bran with a bluntness that the other servants avoid, telling him that the old gods are sad and that they have no power in the south, where the weirwoods have been cut down. She is the one who tells Bran that the raven bringing news from the south carries dark tidings, and she is there when the maester reads the letter confirming Lord Eddard Stark's death.

Osha serves as a living link to the world beyond the Wall, a world that the Starks of Winterfell have only heard of in Old Nan's stories. Her presence in the castle provides a constant, low-level reminder that the real war is not between the great houses of the south, but against the cold and the dark that are gathering in the north.
