Direwolf
The direwolf is a creature of legend in the Seven Kingdoms, a species of wolf far larger and more formidable than the common wolves that roam the southern woods. For two hundred years, no direwolf had been sighted south of the Wall, and their existence had passed into the realm of story and song. That changes in the first chapter of the book, when the Stark children discover a dead direwolf and her litter of pups in the snow near Winterfell, an event that immediately marks the beginning of a new and dangerous era.
Identity and Physical Characteristics
The direwolf is distinguished from ordinary wolves by its immense size and strength. The dead mother wolf that the Starks find is described as "bigger than [Bran's] pony, twice the size of the largest hound in his father's kennel" .
