Lharys

Lharys is a man-at-arms in the service of Lord Jonos Bracken, a bannerman to House Tully of Riverrun. He is one of three Bracken men—alongside Kurleket and Mohor—who answer Catelyn Stark's call for aid at the crossroads inn, where she publicly accuses Tyrion Lannister of attempting to murder her son Bran. Lharys and his companions join the party escorting the captive dwarf into the Mountains of the Moon, a decision that places them in the path of deadly mountain clan attacks.

Role as Scout and Survivor

During the arduous journey through the high road, Lharys proves his value as a scout. When the party stops to rest by a stream, Ser Rodrik Cassel sends him scrambling up a wind-carved ridge to watch the road. From his vantage point, Lharys spots the approaching mountain clansmen—twenty to twenty-five riders, he estimates, likely Milk Snakes or Moon Brothers—and scrambles back down to deliver the warning, landing breathless before Catelyn Stark. His timely report allows the party to prepare for the assault, though the ensuing battle is brutal. Lharys survives the fight, unlike his fellow Bracken men Kurleket and Mohor, who are both killed. After the battle, he is among those who help gather stones for cairns to bury the dead, though the party is forced to abandon the task and ride on when the sellsword Bronn warns that lingering will invite a second attack.

Later Journey and Disappearance

Lharys continues with the diminished party as they press on toward the Vale. When Tyrion Lannister, now armed and riding his own horse, attempts to take a dirk from a fallen clansman, Lharys steps forward and demands the weapon back. Catelyn Stark overrules him, ordering that the dwarf keep the knife and his axe, as they may be needed in further fighting. Lharys does not appear again in the narrative after this point; his ultimate fate is unrecorded, though he is not listed among the dead in the subsequent mountain clan attack or the journey to the Eyrie. His brief appearances mark him as a competent but minor figure, emblematic of the many small lords and retainers whose loyalties are tested and whose lives are risked in the escalating conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters.
