Jafer Flowers was a ranger of the Night's Watch, one of six men who rode out from Castle Black under the command of First Ranger Benjen Stark on a ranging into the haunted forest. He never returned alive. Weeks later, his body and that of his fellow ranger Othor were discovered by a party led by Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, after Jon Snow's direwolf Ghost found the severed hand of one of the dead men. The discovery of the corpses, which bore terrible wounds yet showed no signs of decay, no maggots, and no animal scavenging, deeply unsettled the rangers and forced the Watch to confront something beyond ordinary death. The bodies were brought back to Castle Black, where they were stored in a cold cell carved into the base of the Wall, awaiting examination by Maester Aemon.
Death and the Anomalous State of the Corpse
Jafer Flowers was found with a great gash in his neck, his head attached only by a few ropes of pale tendon, a wound Ser Jaremy Rykker judged to have been made by an axe—likely the axe that Othor carried. His right hand had been torn off by Ghost, leaving a ruin of torn flesh and splintered bone. Yet despite the violence of his death, his body was not rotting. Samwell Tarly, who had been sent by Maester Aemon to observe, pointed out that the blood on the corpses was dry and crusted, not fresh and clotted as it would be on a recent kill. There were no maggots, no worms, and no signs of having been chewed or eaten by animals, save for Ghost's intervention. The dogs and horses refused to go near the bodies, and the rangers noted that Jafer Flowers's eyes, which had not been blue in life, now stared up at the sky with a sapphire hue. This unnatural state, combined with the absence of any blood on the ground around the bodies, suggested to Sam and to the old forester Dywen that the men had not died where they were found, but had been brought there and left as a warning.
Reanimation and the Attack on Castle Black
The true horror of Jafer Flowers's fate was revealed when the dead rose. On the night after the bodies were brought back, a wight—the reanimated corpse of Jafer Flowers—attacked the Lord Commander's Tower. It killed the guard outside Jon Snow's cell, twisting his head completely around, and then made its way to Mormont's solar. Jon, alerted by Ghost's agitation, found the thing—a man-shape in black, its eyes shining with an icy blue radiance—sliding toward the Lord Commander's sleeping cell. Ghost attacked, but the wight's black hands tightened around the direwolf's throat. Jon struck with a longsword, shearing through sleeve and skin and bone, yet the sound was wrong, and the smell was queer and cold. The severed arm continued to writhe and crawl on its own, clawing at Jon's leg. The corpse, even with its face cut open to the bone and half its nose gone, felt nothing and kept coming. It slammed Jon to the floor and forced its black, icy fingers down his throat, choking him. The attack was only ended when Lord Commander Mormont appeared in the doorway with an oil lamp, and Jon, remembering the fire that had destroyed Othor's corpse, flung the lamp into a pile of drapes, setting the wight ablaze. The flames consumed the dead flesh, driving out whatever demonic force had animated it.
Significance and Narrative Role
Jafer Flowers's death and reanimation serve as a crucial piece of evidence that the threat beyond the Wall is not merely wildlings or the cold, but something far more ancient and terrible: the Others and their power to raise the dead. His body, along with Othor's, provided the first concrete, undeniable proof at Castle Black that the wights were real, forcing even skeptical rangers and officers to accept a truth they had long dismissed as legend. The attack also forged a bond between Jon Snow and Lord Commander Mormont, as Jon's quick thinking with fire saved the Old Bear's life. Mormont later sent Ser Alliser Thorne to King's Landing with the severed hand of Jafer Flowers, hoping to use it as proof to convince the new king of the danger. The incident directly precipitated Mormont's decision to lead a great ranging beyond the Wall, a mission in which Jon Snow would play a key role. Jafer Flowers, a man who in life was a loyal ranger, became in death a herald of the Long Night, a silent, blue-eyed messenger of the apocalypse that was gathering in the north.
