Oswell Whent

Oswell Whent was a knight of the Kingsguard under King Aerys II Targaryen, one of the three legendary white-cloaked brothers who stood guard at the Tower of Joy in Dorne during the final days of Robert's Rebellion, and whose unwavering loyalty to the fallen dynasty defined his brief but resonant role in the story.

Identity and the Kingsguard

Oswell Whent was a Sworn Brother of the Kingsguard, the elite order of seven knights sworn to protect the king and his family for life. He was present at the tourney at Harrenhal in the Year of the False Spring, where he helped the newly knighted Jaime Lannister to his feet after the young lion made his vows to King Aerys, and stood alongside the Lord Commander Ser Gerold Hightower and Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, as they welcomed their newest brother into the white cloak. His sigil was the black bat of House Whent, displayed across his white-enameled helm.

The Tower of Joy

During the final stages of Robert's Rebellion, after the death of Prince Rhaegar at the Trident and the sack of King's Landing, Oswell Whent was one of three Kingsguard who remained at a round tower in the red mountains of Dorne, later called the Tower of Joy by Rhaegar. When Eddard Stark came to the tower with six companions—Martyn Cassel, Theo Wull, Ethan Glover, Ser Mark Ryswell, Howland Reed, and Lord Dustin—he found Whent, Hightower, and Dayne waiting before the entrance. Whent was on one knee, sharpening his blade with a whetstone, his black bat helm beside him. When Ned asked why they had not been at the Trident, Whent replied, "We were not there," and when Ned noted that Ser Willem Darry had fled to Dragonstone with the queen and Prince Viserys, Whent answered, "Ser Willem is a good man and true," before Hightower added, "But not of the Kingsguard. The Kingsguard does not flee." Whent and his brothers then donned their helms and drew their swords, facing seven opponents in a fight that ended with all three Kingsguard dead and only Ned and Howland Reed surviving.

Narrative Role and Significance

Oswell Whent appears only in Eddard Stark's fever dream, a recurring memory that haunts him years later. In that dream, Whent and his two brothers are not shadows but figures whose faces "burned clear," their words and actions etched into Ned's conscience. Whent's presence at the Tower of Joy, alongside the two most renowned knights of the Kingsguard, underscores the depth of the Targaryen loyalists' commitment: even after the dynasty had fallen, these three knights held their post, guarding whatever secret lay within the tower. His refusal to flee, his calm preparation for battle, and his death in a fight he could not win make him a symbol of the Kingsguard's ancient vow—a vow that, in the end, proved stronger than the king they had sworn to protect. The dream itself, which Ned recalls while lying wounded in the Red Keep, serves as a reminder of the promises he made to his dying sister Lyanna and the cost of keeping them.
