Learning of His Mother's Death
In the middle of the night, Theo receives a phone call from a social worker, who asks to speak to his father. When Theo insists on knowing what is wrong, the social worker evades his questions. Later, two social workers arrive at the apartment and take him to a diner. There, they tell him the devastating news: his mother was killed by flying debris in the explosion. She died instantly. Theo is numb with shock, unable to fully absorb the reality of his loss as the social workers explain that he will be placed in temporary custody.
