Welty's Final Moments

Struggling through the rubble, Theo finds the elderly man from the gallery, Welton Blackwell, gravely injured. Welty is confused and fading, mistaking Theo for someone else. He speaks of music, auditions, and memories of a lost world in Cairo. In his delirium, he presses his heavy gold signet ring into Theo's hand and gives him a cryptic message: "Hobart and Blackwell. Ring the green bell." He also urgently directs Theo to take a small, dusty painting—The Goldfinch—from the wreckage, insisting it must be saved. Welty dies in Theo's arms, leaving the boy with the ring and the painting, a burden he does not yet understand.
