The Morning of the Museum Bombing
Thirteen-year-old Theo Decker is suspended from school, and his mother, Audrey, takes the morning off work for a conference with his teachers. They leave their apartment on East Fifty-Seventh Street, sharing a tense, awkward cab ride uptown. Feeling carsick, Audrey decides to get out early on Fifth Avenue, and they take shelter from a sudden downpour under the portico of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. To pass the time until their appointment, Audrey suggests they visit a special exhibition of Dutch Golden Age paintings, a decision that will fatefully alter the course of their lives.
