Eagles

The Eagles are the great birds of Middle-earth, creatures of the high mountain realms who move between the world of the Free Peoples and the wild places beyond their borders. In the narrative of the War of the Ring they appear sparingly but always at moments of extremity, descending from the sky to snatch the doomed from destruction or to bear witness to the turning of the age. Their interventions are few, yet each one alters the course of events — carrying Gandalf from the peak of Orthanc, lifting him from the abyss of Moria, and finally sweeping over the Black Gate in the hour of Sauron's fall. They are not servants of any power, but their allegiance to the cause of the West is proven in the darkest hours of the war.
