Elven cloak

The Elven cloak is a garment of the Galadhrim, the Elves of Lothlórien, given to each member of the Fellowship of the Ring as they departed from that land. Woven by the Lady Galadriel herself and her maidens, the cloaks were more than simple clothing; they were a parting gift that carried the hue and beauty of Lothlórien itself, and a practical aid for a company about to venture into lands where unfriendly eyes would watch for them. The cloaks were presented alongside other gifts from the Lord and Lady of the Galadhrim, forming part of the ceremonial farewell that marked the Company's transition from the safety of the Elven realm to the perils of the wider world.

Appearance and Craftsmanship

The cloaks were made of a light but warm silken stuff that the Galadhrim wove, each one tailored to the size of its wearer. Their colour was difficult to describe: they seemed grey with the hue of twilight under the trees, yet when moved or set in another light, they appeared green as shadowed leaves, or brown as fallow fields by night, or dusk-silver as water under the stars. Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver. When Peregrin Took asked whether they were magic cloaks, the leader of the Elves answered that they were fair garments with good web, made in that land, and that the Elves put the thought of all that they loved into all that they made. He was careful to note that they were garments, not armour, and would not turn shaft or blade.

The Gift of the Galadhrim

The cloaks were given to the Company as part of the gifts offered by the Lord and Lady of the Galadhrim in memory of Lothlórien, after the Company had drunk the cup of parting. The leader of the Elves explained that the Lady herself and her maidens had woven the stuff, and that never before had they clad strangers in the garb of their own people, marking the Company as being high in the favour of the Lady. The cloaks were described as a great aid in keeping out of the sight of unfriendly eyes, whether one walked among the stones or the trees, making them particularly valuable for the stealthy journey that lay ahead.

Function and Significance

The practical function of the cloaks was concealment, helping the wearers to avoid detection as they travelled through dangerous territory. Their colour-shifting nature, blending with the twilight, leaves, fields, and water, made them ideal for moving unseen. Beyond their practical use, the cloaks carried deep symbolic meaning: they were a tangible expression of the Elves' love for Lothlórien, and of Galadriel's particular favour toward the Company. The gift established a bond between the Elves and the travellers, a memory of the fair land they were leaving behind as they moved toward the grey and leafless world. The cloaks thus served as both a practical tool for survival and a reminder of the beauty and goodwill that the Company carried with them into the darkness.
