Celine

Up

Celine is a trainee nurse on the PAAZ whose brief encounters with Emma show how care is shaped through ordinary acts of orientation and explanation. She helps Emma navigate the ward’s daily routines, though what feels welcoming to Celine can feel uncomfortable or confusing to Emma.

Identity and introduction

Emma first recognizes Celine as the girl from the bicycle when she looks into Emma’s room. Celine appears somewhat uncertain, but addresses Emma by her surname until Emma invites her to use her first name. She introduces herself as a trainee nurse and expects they will meet again, placing her among the staff Emma is beginning to encounter during her admission.

Helping Emma join the ward routine

Celine finds Emma in her room during the day and asks whether she has been to the hospital restaurant for lunch. Emma cannot remember lunch and explains that she has no leave privileges. Celine notes that patients are not generally meant to spend the daytime in their rooms, but immediately qualifies the rule: with nobody else around, the lounge would not be very convivial either. She invites Emma to dinner rather than turning the exchange into a reprimand.

Celine takes the dinner trolley and its trays from the lift and leads the way toward the locked ward. When Emma hesitates, Celine explains that weekend dinners are held there so patients will not be sitting alone. The reassurance exposes a small difference in perspective: Celine presents the arrangement as sociable, while Emma observes that the nursing staff have a different idea of conviviality. Celine’s invitation is practical and well-meant, but it cannot determine how the ward’s version of company feels to its patients.

The crossed-out appointment

In another brief encounter, Celine explains a post-it bearing Emma’s name, a time, and a line through that time. An appointment had been arranged, she says, but the scheduled time proved impossible; she crossed it out to prevent confusion. The replacement time has not yet been confirmed, and Emma will hear later that day when she can come instead. The note offers no firm appointment, only an explanation and the promise of further information.

Narrative role

Celine is drawn through small acts rather than a separate plot arc: she identifies herself, offers Emma a place at dinner, and clarifies an administrative alteration. These moments connect the PAAZ’s everyday procedures to Emma’s uncertain experience of being a patient. Celine can make a rule more humane by explaining it and offering company, but her notion of what will feel comfortable does not necessarily match Emma’s.
