Arrival in Ramsdale

Humbert travels to Ramsdale, New England, to stay with the McCoo family, but their house has just burned down. The distraught Mr. McCoo arranges for Humbert to lodge with a neighbor, Mrs. Charlotte Haze, at 342 Lawn Street. Reluctantly, Humbert goes to the Haze house, a white-frame horror. He is greeted by Charlotte, a middle-aged, pretentious woman, and is shown the room. He is unimpressed and plans to leave immediately.
