Lolita's secret affair with Quilty

While in Beardsley, Lolita secretly rekindles a relationship with Clare Quilty, a playwright she had met earlier. Quilty, who had been at The Enchanted Hunters hotel the night Humbert and Lolita first stayed there, becomes her lover. He uses the play rehearsals as a cover to meet her. Humbert, unaware of the affair, becomes increasingly paranoid about a mysterious red convertible that seems to be following them.
