Murder of Clare Quilty
Humbert drives to Quilty's mansion, Pavor Manor, determined to kill him. He finds Quilty in a drug-induced stupor. After a long, surreal struggle, Humbert shoots him multiple times. Quilty, despite being mortally wounded, continues to taunt Humbert, even playing the piano. Humbert finally kills him, but the act brings him no satisfaction. He leaves the house, feeling empty and defeated.
