Marriage to Valeria
Seeking a conventional life to control his urges, Humbert marries Valeria, a Polish woman who imitates a little girl. The marriage is a failure; Valeria is revealed to be a dull, middle-aged woman, and Humbert finds her repulsive. In the summer of 1939, Humbert inherits an income from an American uncle, which requires him to move to the United States. Just as they are preparing to leave, Valeria confesses she is having an affair with a Russian taxi driver, Maximovich. Humbert, enraged but helpless, divorces her. He later learns that Valeria and Maximovich moved to California and participated in a bizarre anthropological experiment.
