The cross-country road trip
Humbert and Lolita embark on a year-long road trip across the United States. They stay in motels, visit tourist attractions, and live a nomadic life. Humbert is obsessed with keeping Lolita to himself, but she is often bored, moody, and rebellious. He tries to control her through bribes, threats, and constant vigilance. The trip is a mixture of ecstasy for Humbert and misery for Lolita, who longs for a normal life with friends her own age.
