Machigi
PeacemakerMachigi, Lord of the Taisigi, emerges as a regional power whose political significance lies in the possibility of changing alliances. Once an apparent target of the Shadow Guild’s designs in the Marid, he became Ilisidi’s official ally and signed a trade agreement that opened a carefully limited path toward the Aishidi’tat. His dealings mark a shift from inherited enmity toward pragmatic cooperation, but one bounded by explicit conditions.
Identity and Regional Position
Machigi rules the Taisigi in the southern Marid. From Cajeiri’s perspective, the relationship was striking because the Dojisigi and their neighbors the Taisigi had both long been problems for the north, while the Taisigi lord had now become Ilisidi’s official ally. That juxtaposition makes Machigi’s new position a visible instance of political change rather than a simple continuation of old clan divisions.
Target of the Shadow Guild
The Shadow Guild’s effort to strengthen its arrangement with allies in the northern Marid led it to target Machigi. The move brought the conspirators into conflict with his high-level, locally trained bodyguard. The account presents this as a consequential miscalculation: the Guild’s reach into the region did not make Machigi an easy instrument of its plans, and its attempt to deal with him instead helped create an adversary with local strength and political alternatives.
Alliance and Trade with Ilisidi
As the balance of power shifted, Machigi signed a trade agreement with Ilisidi. The agreement was a first step toward a broader understanding with the Aishidi’tat, not an unconditional commitment to join it. Its limit was explicit: Machigi was to keep his influence off the west coast. Trade thus became both a practical connection and a means of setting the terms of political cooperation.
Political Significance
Machigi’s trajectory contrasts with the Shadow Guild’s coercive approach. A ruler whom the Guild targeted in pursuit of its northern interests instead entered an agreement with Ilisidi, while the Dojisigi territory from which the Guild had operated was being taken over by the legitimate Guild. Cajeiri’s observations place Machigi’s alliance within a wider pattern in which former regional antagonisms could change as power and trade shifted. His position remained conditional, but that very qualification shows how the new alignment was negotiated rather than assumed.
