The empty white bed

Possession

The empty white bed is a recurring image of desired vacancy in Roland Michell and Maud Bailey’s conversations: a clean, empty bed in a clean, empty room, where nothing is asked and nothing need be asked. It gives form to their wish to be without desire, first as a reflection on Roland’s circumstances and then as a striking likeness between them. Recalled at the Foss and echoed in a later exchange about narrow white beds, the image gathers private weariness and growing intimacy without resolving either into a declaration.
