The Beginning of the Struggle He must now fight to maintain his own identity. The struggle is internal, between the two selves that share one consciousness.

The Escalating Fight Hyde's Growing Strength Hyde becomes more powerful as Jekyll weakens. The transformations are no longer voluntary; they happen at any moment. Jekyll must take the drug to stay himself. The Psychological Warfare Hyde plays tricks on Jekyll: scrawling blasphemies, burning letters, destroying portraits. He enjoys tormenting Jekyll. The conflict is now a war of attrition. The Fear of Permanent Loss Jekyll fears that he will become Hyde permanently. He fights to retain his own personality, but he is losing. The struggle is desperate and exhausting.

The Final Capitulation

The Final Capitulation The Inevitable End Jekyll knows that he cannot win. The drug is running out, and Hyde will soon be the only one left. He writes his confession, accepting his fate. The Last Act of Hybridity When Hyde commits suicide, he also kills Jekyll. They are co-heirs to death. The struggle for control ends with the destruction of both. The Unity in Death In death, they are reunited. The body found is Hyde's, but it is also Jekyll's. The conflict is resolved, but only in annihilation.
