Antoine returns home

Antoine Mauriac, having escaped from a POW camp, returns to Le Jardin. He is emaciated and traumatized. Vianne is overjoyed but also terrified of telling him about her rape and pregnancy. She decides to lie, telling him the baby is his, conceived on his first night home. Antoine accepts the lie, choosing to believe in a new beginning.
