The exodus and bombing at Tours
Isabelle's journey south becomes a nightmare. The Humberts run out of petrol, and Isabelle is separated from them. She joins the mass of refugees on the road. German Stukas attack the column, strafing and bombing the civilians. Isabelle is saved by Gaëtan Dubois, a former prisoner, who pulls her to safety. The experience traumatizes her and fuels her hatred of the Nazis.
