EA-6B Prowler
AfterburnThe EA-6B Prowler is an electronic-warfare aircraft whose role in the novel is to shape the conditions under which other aircraft can operate. Flying from the Jefferson, Prowlers jam hostile systems, help protect the air group, and complicate the enemy’s ability to detect and respond to approaching aircraft. Their work makes electronic cover an active part of the campaign rather than a background aid to the strike force.
Role in the Air Group
A pair of EA-6B Prowlers is reported on its way to support a BARCAP flight. Their electronic countermeasures are expected to burn through enemy jamming and provide electronic cover for the other aircraft. The Prowlers therefore counter interference while also helping shield the air operations that depend on them.
Spoiler and Pouncer Flights
In the operation toward Yalta, two separate flights of Prowler ECM aircraft leave the Jefferson about an hour apart from the main action. Spoiler cuts inland, heading north and crossing the coast near Gurzuf. Its task is to provoke an enemy response, drawing missile fire and interceptor squadrons if possible so the route to Yalta from the sea can be cleared.
Pouncer takes the parallel coastal route. It jams enemy systems while recording radar sites that expose their positions by tracking the aircraft. It is also assigned selective ECM coverage for the rest of the force and launches AGM-136A Tacit Rainbow anti-radiation cruise missiles. Its mission combines concealment and information-gathering with attacks on radar, complementing Spoiler’s more overt effort to draw the enemy out.
Tactical Significance
The two flights use electronic warfare in contrasting but coordinated ways: Spoiler seeks to make the enemy react, while Pouncer masks the force and identifies radar threats. Together, their actions help clear an approach from the sea to Yalta. The Prowler’s significance lies in this capacity to influence what the opposing force can see, track, and respond to, shaping the air operation before the other aircraft reach their objective.
