Long

Gunsoul

Long is an ancient dragon sage whose brief appearance carries consequences far beyond his mountain domain: he heals Holster of her Human Pillar status, demands a perilous month of service from Yuan Guang in exchange, and later protects the Cube of Natho while the heroes pursue other threats. Though the narrative withholds the details of his test, Long’s authority is established through the mixture of fear, majesty, and practical reliability with which Holster remembers him.

Identity and Appearance

Long is described as a great elder dragon and a wise dragon sage, an immense and ancient being with golden scales that shine brighter than the sun and horns rising from his head like a crown. Holster remembers being both frightened and amazed when she first encountered him seated upon a throne of treasure and spirit-roots. The image combines royal magnificence with the danger of an intelligence powerful enough to dictate terms to travelers who have little choice but to accept them.

Long’s identity also stands apart from the ordinary hierarchy that has defined Yuan Guang’s early life. Yuan was born without the potential to form a qi core and was therefore treated as a Scrap, one of the many people expected to serve cultivators rather than become one. Even after Yuan eventually became a First Coil cultivator, the social wound left by that classification remained visible in the contrast between his hard-won advancement and Long’s primordial stature. Holster, meanwhile, was hardly better than a Scrap in practical prospects because her Human Pillar core hoarded qi instead of returning it to her body, making the dragon’s intervention decisive rather than ornamental.

The Bargain That Saved Holster

Long enters the story through a journey that lasted a year across the wastes. By the time Holster recalled the meeting, four years had passed since the group found him, but the encounter remained vivid: the golden dragon’s grandeur inspired wonder, while his demand that Yuan Guang work for him for a full month made the same figure frightening. Long agreed to cure Holster of her Human Pillar status only after Yuan accepted this condition.

The bargain matters because Holster’s condition was not a temporary weakness. The procedure that made her a Human Pillar had turned her into a living qi battery. Her core stockpiled energy and gave little back to her flesh, meaning that no amount of cycling could carry her to the Second Coil. Long’s healing therefore offered more than physical relief: it broke the future imposed on her by the people who had raised and exploited her as an instrument. The narrative does not reveal the task Long assigned Yuan, but its effect on the family is clear. Yuan refused to discuss it, and even the mention of the dragon continued to frighten him more than any demigod of ultraviolence, while Holster understood that he had been thoroughly tested.

Keeper of the Cube of Natho

Long’s importance continues after the healing. He kept his word by agreeing to safeguard the Cube of Natho from threats until Yuan Guang and his allies could find a way to destroy the evil within it. This arrangement gave the group permission to turn their attention elsewhere without abandoning the danger represented by the cube.

That custodial role places Long in a deliberate contrast with the demigods of ultraviolence. The Nuke was safely contained under the protection of Long and the others, while the Blade, the Biohazard, and the Arson remained free to torment people. Long does not erase the larger crisis; he creates a temporary boundary around one of its most dangerous objects. His value is consequently measured through containment, patience, and fidelity to an agreement rather than through a displayed battle.

Relationship to the Traveling Group

Holster remembers Long as part of the group’s long-term effort to protect vulnerable people and oppose the demigods. After the group had already put down the Gun and the Bow, their search for the Truck led them into the region where they encountered local slavers and chose to destroy the guild. The hunt for the Truck was especially difficult because the target could teleport across vast distances and attacked isolated victims unpredictably, apparently favoring young men of Japanese descent. Long’s protection of the Cube allowed the group to pursue such threats while preserving a secure answer to the cube’s immediate danger.

The relationship between Long and Yuan is therefore based on obligation rather than simple allegiance. Yuan’s promise to work for him was made in order to save Holster, and the secrecy surrounding the assignment leaves Long’s authority partly defined by what remains untold. Yet Long’s later custody of the Cube of Natho confirms that the bargain was not an isolated act of exploitation. He is stern and imposing, but he fulfills the central promise on which the transaction rested.

Narrative Significance

Long functions as a threshold figure between the family’s immediate survival and the wider mythic conflict. Yuan’s path begins in the humiliation of being a Scrap, while Holster’s body has been deliberately reduced to a resource; Long interrupts both conditions through an exchange that demands sacrifice but produces genuine restoration. His golden, crowned form makes him resemble a traditional sovereign, yet the story gives his power ethical weight through the consequences of his decisions: Holster is healed, the Cube of Natho is guarded, and the pursuit of the remaining demigods can continue.

The withheld details of Yuan’s month-long service also preserve Long’s mystery. The narrative supplies the visible cost and the lasting fear without converting the dragon into a fully explained quest-giver. That restraint makes Long significant less for the number of scenes he occupies than for the future he makes possible. He is the ancient guardian who turns a nearly irreversible condition into a recoverable life and transforms a dangerous object from an immediate catastrophe into a contained responsibility.
