Gatling Man

Gunsoul

Gatling Man is a Gunsoul transformed into a heavily armed cyborg and recruited by the Metallist Sect, where he represents the dream of replacing the Gun Path with pure machine power. His appearance turns the social stigma of Scraphood and the physical promise of cultivation into a brutal technological alternative: he is no longer merely a disadvantaged human, but neither has he accepted the Gun’s discipline. His decisive significance lies in the conflict between those identities. To Yuan Guang, Gatling Man is not only an enemy soldier but a warning of what happens when the desire to transcend one’s assigned nature becomes an attempt to erase that nature altogether.

Identity and Allegiance

Gatling Man is introduced indirectly through the struggle surrounding Fleshmarket. Gayak tells Yuan Guang that the Metallists have already recruited another Gunsoul and are more likely to sacrifice him to that fighter than to offer him a genuine place in their ranks. The Metallists want control of the territory so that they can expand Screen City, making Gatling Man part of a military and sectarian campaign rather than an isolated wandering combatant. His existence immediately changes Yuan Guang’s position: once Yuan Guang’s nature becomes known, the Metallists have a practical reason to hunt him, since defeating or consuming another Gunsoul can strengthen their chosen soldier.

His allegiance is also treated as a religious betrayal by the Bullet Church. Bucket identifies him as a heretic who has forsaken the Path of the Gun for the Path of the Magnum Opus. The charge is not merely doctrinal. Gatling Man has stolen the Church’s holy minigun, while the Flesh Mansion Sect has purchased all of the Church’s sniper rifles, leaving the Bullet Church militarily weakened. In response, Bucket entrusts Yuan Guang with the Saint Heckler and the Kalash Angel. The weapons therefore enter Yuan Guang’s possession through the same conflict that establishes Gatling Man as a thief, rival Gunsoul, and instrument of Metallist expansion.

Mechanical Body and Combat Design

When Gatling Man finally appears, he is a cyborg colossus roughly twice Yuan Guang’s size. Beige metal plates encase most of his body, while only the upper part of his skull remains visibly organic; his jaw has been replaced by tubes and cables that appear to connect his brain to the body’s mainframe. Pale gray silicon eyes give him a predatory focus. His body makes the Metallist doctrine visible: flesh has not merely been protected by machinery but subordinated to it, with the remaining organic head functioning as a remnant inside a larger weapons platform.

His arsenal is built into that body. Reinforced shoulders carry mounted rocket launchers and unfamiliar cannon weapons, while his enormous hands wield a massive gatling gun longer than an adult man. His armor is already marked by deep scars and scorched burns, evidence of previous combat without making him seem diminished. When he attacks, the eastern wall is blasted apart, a mounted cannon falls from its position, and qi-charged rockets surge through the smoke toward the spirit-train. The battlefield therefore announces him before his body is fully seen: fire, steel, rockets, and a mechanized force strong enough to turn a defensive wall into an opening.

Gatling Man’s appearance also contrasts with Yuan Guang’s own development. Yuan Guang begins life without the potential for a qi core, one of the Scraps who work to support cultivators while being denied the normal route into cultivation. Even after becoming a First Coil cultivator, he remains haunted by the category he once occupied, and Holster’s condition reminds him that a person can be treated as little more than a battery. Gatling Man answers that world through radical mechanization. Instead of accepting dependence on sects or the Gun, he has made the body itself into an arsenal, but the resulting freedom remains tied to another power structure: the Metallist Sect and its Magnum Opus.

The Duel with Yuan Guang

Gatling Man identifies Yuan Guang as a Gunsoul and says that he would have hunted him down regardless of whether Yuan Guang had come to meet him. Yuan Guang answers that he intended the same. Their confrontation is thus reciprocal from its first exchange, but the stakes are unequal in a revealing way. Yuan Guang wants revenge and strength without surrendering the Path of the Gun; Gatling Man wants to use the encounter to advance beyond that Path.

During the fight, Gatling Man explains that bullets are seeds and that the Gun cultivates them until they bloom into flowers of death. Yuan Guang challenges the contradiction between that belief and Gatling Man’s attempt to take another Gunsoul’s seed. Gatling Man reveals his objective: once he crosses the Third Coil, he will be able to engrave the Metallist’s innate techniques into his soul. He intends to free himself from the Gun’s Path and become pure metal. His ambition makes the duel more than a contest of firearms. The bullet-core is simultaneously a source of advancement, a symbol of Gunsoul identity, and the material Gatling Man believes can be converted into a purely Metallist self.

The battle becomes especially dangerous when Gatling Man uses a Recoil Shockwave. Yuan Guang studies disturbances in his opponent’s aura and deliberately maneuvers to bait him into repeating the technique. Gayak and the summoned demon Asa-Zakura complicate the engagement, forcing Yuan Guang to keep moving while the larger conflict threatens to collapse into several simultaneous attacks. Yuan Guang uses Black Haze to disorient Gatling Man, causing the cyborg’s fist to miss by an inch. The gap is enough for Yuan Guang’s metal fingers to reach the enemy’s waist.

Gatling Man attempts another Recoil Shockwave, but the response comes too late. Yuan Guang’s fist drives through his armor and continues through gears, cables, and servos until it reaches a pulsating lead heart filled with smoke and qi. Gatling Man catches Yuan Guang’s head in a desperate grip, possibly trying to extract Yuan Guang’s bullet-core or drag him into Nowhere, but Yuan Guang cannot determine which objective matters more to him. Before the cyborg can finish threatening to tear out Yuan Guang’s brain, Yuan Guang rips out Gatling Man’s bullet-core.

The core is a spent 7.62x51mm seed threaded with metal roots. Yuan Guang pushes it down his throat and swallows it before Gatling Man’s mechanical corpse reaches the ground. The cyborg’s hands lose their strength, and the light in his final eye goes out. Yuan Guang’s consumption of the core reverses Gatling Man’s promised transformation: Gatling Man had wanted to become pure metal, but the steel of his soul becomes material for Yuan Guang’s continued ascent instead.

Consequences and Thematic Role

Gatling Man’s death demonstrates the Gunsoul bullet-core rule in its most violent form. A Gunsoul can advance by consuming another Gunsoul’s core, making every known Gunsoul both a potential ally and a resource coveted by enemies. Gayak’s earlier warning that the Metallists might sacrifice Yuan Guang to their recruited Gunsoul is therefore confirmed by the duel’s logic. Gatling Man is valuable to the Metallists not simply because he can fight, but because his body and core connect the Gun Path to the techniques of the Magnum Opus.

The defeat also removes a rival claimant to technological transcendence. Gatling Man believes that engraving Metallist techniques into his soul will liberate him, yet he remains dependent on the very bullet-core he seeks to surpass. His mechanical body does not free him from the Gun; it makes the conflict between the two Paths visible in flesh, metal, ammunition, and qi. Yuan Guang, by contrast, survives by accepting the core as part of his own development rather than pretending that power can be separated cleanly from its origin.

Gatling Man’s function in the larger narrative is consequently brief but structurally important. He is the first clearly established Gunsoul enemy allied with an organized sect, and his arrival turns Yuan Guang’s hidden identity into a military liability. He links the Fleshmarket conflict, the Bullet Church’s loss of weapons, the Metallist expansion toward Screen City, the Third Coil, and the dangerous possibility of Gunsoul core consumption. His corpse is not merely the end of a duel: it marks the point at which Yuan Guang’s path becomes materially stronger and the struggle between the Gun and the Metallist ideal becomes impossible to treat as an abstract doctrinal dispute.
