Mr. Vance, a history teacher, opens the door to check on the fire alarm. Charlie shoots at him, missing, then shoots him in the throat, killing him. The class watches in shock as Mr. Vance stumbles backward and falls. Charlie orders Ted Jones to lock the door, and the hostage situation begins.
