Laila, Tariq, Aziza, and Zalmai flee to Murree, Pakistan. Tariq and Laila marry in a simple ceremony. They begin a new life, working at a hotel owned by Tariq's friend. Laila finds happiness and safety, but she is haunted by Mariam's sacrifice and feels a pull to return to Afghanistan.
