Nana's suicide

After Jalil fails to meet her, Mariam walks to Herat alone and spends the night outside his house, only to see his face briefly in a window before he hides. She is driven back to the kolba by his chauffeur, where she discovers Nana has hanged herself from a weeping willow tree. Nana's suicide is a direct consequence of Mariam's perceived abandonment, leaving Mariam consumed with guilt and grief.
