After Nana's death, Jalil and his wives inform Mariam that she is to be married to Rasheed, a much older shoemaker from Kabul. Mariam protests, but Jalil refuses to intervene. The nikka ceremony is hastily performed, and Mariam is sent away on a bus to Kabul with her new husband. This event marks the end of her childhood and her forced entry into a life of submission and hardship.
