Mariam arrives in Kabul

Mariam arrives at Rasheed's house in the Deh-Mazang district of Kabul. The house is modest but a mansion compared to the kolba. Rasheed shows her around, gives her a room of her own, and places a basket of white tuberoses on the windowsill. Mariam feels utterly alone and homesick, crying for her lost life. This marks the beginning of her new, constrained existence.
