When Rasheed discovers Tariq's return, he attacks Laila, attempting to strangle her. Mariam, seeing Laila about to die, strikes Rasheed with a shovel, killing him. This act of violence is a desperate, final stand against years of abuse. Mariam takes full responsibility, allowing Laila and Tariq to escape.
