Maxim's Confession

Captain Searle leaves, and Maxim tells the narrator the truth: he killed Rebecca. He shot her in the cottage after she told him she was pregnant with another man's child and would pass it off as his heir. He then sank her body in the boat. The narrator is shocked but accepts the truth. She realizes Maxim never loved Rebecca, and they are united in their secret.
