Maxim's Proposal

The narrator goes to Maxim's room and tells him they are leaving. He is shaving and asks her to wait. He then takes her to the terrace for breakfast and proposes to her, saying she can choose between America and Manderley. She is stunned and accepts. He tells her they will marry in a few days and go to Venice for a honeymoon. She is overwhelmed with joy and imagines her life as Mrs de Winter.
