The Fancy Dress Ball Proposed

Lady Crowan suggests reviving the Manderley fancy dress ball. Maxim is reluctant, but the narrator agrees, thinking it would be fun. Frank Crawley is put in charge of arrangements. The narrator decides to keep her costume a secret. She later gets the idea from Mrs Danvers to copy a portrait in the gallery, the one of Caroline de Winter.
