Preparations for the Ball

The house is prepared for the ball. The narrator orders a costume from London, copying the portrait of Caroline de Winter. She keeps it a secret from Maxim and Frank. Beatrice and Giles arrive for the night. The narrator feels excited and important. She goes upstairs to dress, helped by Clarice.
