Walk to the Happy Valley

After the guests leave, Maxim takes the narrator for a walk. They go through the Happy Valley, a beautiful, secluded spot with azaleas and rhododendrons. The narrator is enchanted. They come to a cove with white shingle, and Maxim throws stones for Jasper. The narrator then follows Jasper over the rocks to another cove, where she finds a cottage and a man named Ben. She goes into the cottage to find string for Jasper, and is disturbed by its damp, neglected state.
