Later that evening
The Book of Poems
Back at the hotel, the narrator sits alone in the lounge and reads the book of poems Maxim lent her. It opens to a much-frequented page, 'The Hound of Heaven'. She then sees the dedication: 'Max - from Rebecca. 17 May'. The handwriting is bold and slanting. She shuts the book, disturbed. She remembers Mrs Van Hopper's words about Rebecca's drowning in the bay near Manderley.
