The First Quarrel

Maxim is angry that the narrator went to the other cove and the cottage. They argue on the way back, and Maxim reveals that he never goes near the place because of his memories. He says they should never have come back to Manderley. The narrator is hurt and confused. Later, in the library, she finds a handkerchief in the pocket of the mackintosh she wore, monogrammed with an R. It smells of azaleas, the same scent as in the Happy Valley.
