Calangute

Shantaram

Calangute appears as one stop on the coastal route Lin takes through Goa while searching for Karla. Its significance lies in this early, uncertain stage of the search: the beach is part of a wide-ranging effort to find her, but no one Lin speaks to can confirm that they have seen her.

Setting and Search

Lin rides from Calangute toward Chapora, checking hotels and guesthouses and offering small bribes in the hope of finding information. At the beaches he encounters moneychangers, drug dealers, tour guides, thieves, and gigolos. Many have seen foreign women matching Karla’s general description, but none can say with certainty that the woman they saw was Karla. Lin also asks restaurant waiters and managers, speaking to them in Marathi and Hindi; their willingness to help yields no successful lead on the first day.

Place in the Goa Episode

The search belongs to a broader coastal journey. After reuniting with Karla, Lin and she spend a week playing tourists in Goa, visiting beaches along the Arabian Sea coast from Chapora to Cape Rama. The account places Calangute within the geography of Lin’s earlier search, while the later itinerary presents the coast as shared ground for the reunited pair. Calangute is thus associated first with uncertainty and pursuit, before the Goa episode turns toward companionship and travel.
