Oberoi Hotel
ShantaramOberoi Hotel is both a landmark of Bombay’s upscale urban geography and a meeting place at a turning point in Lin’s fortunes. The hotel’s carefully composed interiors host scenes of professional and social opportunity, but also the sudden arrival of news that breaks through their easy conviviality.
Setting and Character
At Nariman Point, on the handle of Marine Drive’s golden sickle, Oberoi Hotel sits within walking distance of several of Bombay’s central destinations. Churchgate Station and Flora Fountain are five minutes away; Victoria Terminus and Crawford Market lie farther along one route, while Colaba and Gateway Monument are reached in the other direction. The hotel is thus placed between the city’s commercial center and its waterfront districts, a polished node in Lin’s movement through Bombay.
The hotel’s brasserie is described as a strong contender for the city’s best restaurant, while its piano bar is distinguished by its lighting and arrangement of private spaces. Lin enters the brasserie from the bright day outside and pauses until his eyes adjust, then finds Lisa Carter and her party. The transition from street to richly textured interior makes the hotel feel set apart from the city without removing it from the city’s network of movement and business.
A Meeting at a Turning Point
Lin visits the hotel to meet Lisa Carter after handing dollars to Abdul Ghani and collecting his fee. The meeting comes after a year of marked change: once dependent on small commissions from tourists in the slum and carrying only a compromised New Zealand passport, Lin now lives in a modern apartment, has money from illicit work, and possesses five passports bearing his photograph under different names and nationalities. Having travelled to Zaire, Mauritius, and Singapore on forged documents without attracting suspicion, he feels hopeful and begins to think that the dark moods following Prabaker’s wedding night may be lifting.
The hotel setting gives this confidence a visible social form. Lin arrives to join Lisa and her companions, including Cliff De Souza and Chandra Mehta, and greets the group. The scene places his expanding criminal and commercial opportunities alongside an ordinary act of sociability: for a moment, the life he has assembled seems to offer both mobility and companionship.
From Gossip to Urgent News
In a later restaurant gathering, Cliff De Souza entertains the group with Bollywood stories while Chandra Mehta adds gossip. Cliff shows interest in Reeta, and Chandra directs attention toward Geeta; the lunch stretches into plans for spending the day and night together. As the conversation turns increasingly toward sex and scandal, the table’s shared laughter establishes an atmosphere of flirtation and anticipation.
Kavita Singh enters while the laughter is still rippling through the group. Lin introduces her, still buoyed by the conversation, and suggests that she can discuss the case at the table. Kavita firmly corrects him: she has come to speak about Abdullah Taheri, not the case. The interruption changes the scene’s direction without disclosing the news itself in this moment. Oberoi Hotel therefore serves not only as a place where Lin’s new life can be displayed, but as a setting where private danger can abruptly reclaim the attention of a social gathering.
Narrative Significance
The hotel’s polished rooms and central location contrast with the precarious means by which Lin has reached this stage: forged passports, illicit earnings, and a past spent surviving on small commissions. Its brasserie briefly makes possibility feel tangible, while Kavita’s arrival exposes how little that apparent ease can insulate Lin from the lives and threats tied to Abdullah. The location links upward mobility and vulnerability in the same space.
