Gateway of India monument

Shantaram

The Gateway of India monument is both a landmark above Bombay’s floodwaters and the setting for a brief, emotionally charged passage in which Lin reaches Karla by boat. Its flooded surroundings turn the monument into a route through crisis; its vaulted chamber, where Vinod sings, gives that journey an unexpected intimacy.

Setting Above the Flood

The punt sets out from the shallow water near the Radio Club, close to Anand’s India Guest House, and poles along a road normally crowded with taxis, trucks, motorcycles, and private cars. As Lin and Vinod approach the Taj Mahal Hotel, the water deepens to waist level. The hotel stands on a high platform of bluestone and granite, but even its ten marble steps at each entrance are nearly overwhelmed: the flood reaches the second step from the top.

Cars drift and bump together beside the wall around the Gateway of India monument’s great arch. The contrast is stark: the landmark’s monumental stonework remains in place while the city’s ordinary traffic floats helplessly around it. From the hotel entrance, crowded with businessmen, women in designer dresses, actors, politicians, and their fashionable children, the flood is also visible as a disruption reaching the city’s wealth and public life.

A Passage Through the Monument

Karla steps forward as if she has been expecting Lin and accepts his hand into the punt. He wraps Shantu’s oilskin cape around her shoulders and gives her the weathered black chauffeur’s cap Shantu had lent him for luck. Wearing it at a jaunty angle, Karla sits in the centre of the boat as Vinod steers them in a loop toward the Gateway of India monument.

Inside its magnificent vaulted chamber, Vinod begins to sing. The architecture gives his love song a spectacular acoustic: it echoes through the monument and seems to ring in the hearts of those who hear it. The flooded landmark, first encountered as a barrier amid drifting cars, becomes a resonant shelter along their route.

Arrival and Significance

Vinod brings the punt to the taxi stand at the Radio Club Hotel. When Lin reaches to help Karla ashore, she jumps onto the footpath beside him, and they hold on to one another for a moment. Beneath Shantu’s cap, her eyes appear darker green; raindrops glisten in her black hair. She has not spoken during the boat journey. Once in the taxi, she gives the driver her destination: Mahim.

The monument’s role is brief but decisive. The boat’s passage connects the flooded hotel district to Karla’s departure by taxi, while the song in the vaulted chamber makes a public structure the setting for a private moment of contact. Around them, the flood has suspended the city’s normal movement; through the monument, Lin and Karla manage a meeting and a way onward.
