Sea Rock Hotel
ShantaramThe Sea Rock Hotel is a five-star hotel built directly on the sea rocks at Juhu. Its scale, sea-facing windows, and elaborate lunch service make it a polished contrast to the precarious world Lin usually moves through; its foyer also becomes the setting for a chance meeting that opens a new possibility in his life.
Setting and Character
The hotel is described as luxurious and lavishly staffed, comparable to Bombay’s other five-star establishments. From its major restaurants, bars, and many windows, it overlooks the shifting Arabian Sea. Its extensive, eclectic lunch buffet gives Lin a practical reason to welcome the stop: after riding along the coast, he arrives hungry.
The Meeting at the Hotel
Lisa is waiting in the foyer. She appears healthy and confident, and has been off heroin for more than a year. She greets Lin warmly, but reveals that lunch is not the only reason she asked him to come: she wants him to meet Kalpana Iyer, a young woman working as an assistant to a film producer. Kalpana Iyer arrives carrying a clipboard and wearing a stopwatch on a lanyard. When Lin asks about broadcast vans and cables outside, she explains that a film shoot is underway, though the director has disappeared with one of the dancers. The crew has a forty-five-minute break, making lunch possible before work resumes.
From Lunch to a Possible Opportunity
After leaving the hotel, Lin and the women sit in Lisa’s new Fiat to smoke. Lisa explains that Kalpana Iyer oversees casting for minor roles in several films, including non-speaking background parts that require foreign actors. The casting agent has struggled to find suitable foreigners, and Lisa thought of Lin after hearing about the difficulty. The hotel meeting therefore serves as the point where an ordinary lunch gives way to a potential source of work for him.
