Navy Nagar

Shantaram

Navy Nagar is an Indian Navy compound across a small bay from the slum. In a resident’s account of his family history, it is the place where he was conceived, and the setting for the story of his mother’s abandonment and the choices that followed.

Setting and View

From the rocky shore, a curve of coastline separated the speakers from Navy Nagar, but the bay offered a clear view of its houses, huts, and barracks. The compound sits within sight of the slum, so the conversation’s account of a private family history unfolds against a visible neighboring settlement.

Place in a Family History

The resident said he had been conceived in Navy Nagar, though not born there. His mother had moved to Bombay from Delhi at fifteen with her Christian family, whose former prosperity and privileges had diminished after Independence. Her father found work as a clerk with the navy, and the family lived in a nearby settlement. She fell in love with a sailor from Amritsar and became pregnant; after her family expelled her, the sailor left and never returned.

The account connects Navy Nagar to the beginning of a life marked by that separation. The resident explained that his mother presented herself as a widow, wearing white and claiming a dead husband, and that her lifelong sacrifice shaped his decision never to marry. The compound is thus more than a point of origin: in his telling, it stands at the threshold of the family rupture that continued to govern his choices.
