Masjid-i-Tuba Mosque

Shantaram

Masjid-i-Tuba Mosque is a place of striking architectural beauty and active worship in the passage, offering Lin a pause from the danger surrounding his group’s journey. The mosque’s cool, immaculate interior draws his attention upward to a vast white-marble dome, while the news Khaled Ansari brings back from outside quickly restores the threat beyond its walls.

Arrival and Entrance

The group leaves its car a block from the mosque and approaches in single file, each man separated from the next by twenty metres. At the entrance they remove their shoes, which an elderly hajji receives while quietly repeating his meditative zikkir. Khaled presses a folded bank note into the man’s calloused, arthritic hand before the men enter.

The measured approach gives way to an interior that surprises Lin. The mosque is cool and scrupulously clean; marble and stone tiles gleam across fluted pillars, mosaic arches, and broad patterned floors. Above them, a white-marble dome a hundred paces across, set with tiny polished mirrors, commands the space. When the electric lights come on, their reflection makes its curve resemble sunlight rippling across a wind-ruffled lake.

Prayer and Solitude Beneath the Dome

Khaled leaves almost immediately, promising to return as soon as he can. Ahmed Zadeh, Mahmoud Melbaaf, and Lin settle in an alcove with a view of the dome. Evening prayer has already passed—the call of the muezzin reached Lin while the group was driving—but worship continues privately throughout the mosque.

After checking that Lin is comfortable, Ahmed excuses himself to perform the ritual washing of his face, hands, and feet at the bathing fountain. He returns to a clear space beneath the dome and begins to pray. Lin watches with envy at Ahmed’s apparent ease in turning toward God, although he feels no impulse to join him. The sincerity of the prayer instead sharpens Lin’s sense of being alone, enclosed in a mind that feels unconnected.

Sanctuary and Renewed Danger

Ahmed finishes his prayer and walks back toward the alcove just as Khaled returns. The men draw close together, their heads nearly touching, as Khaled quietly reports that the police have been at their hotel. The mosque has offered a brief interval for beauty, prayer, and inward reflection, but it cannot insulate the group from the pursuit around them. Its calm dome becomes the setting for a sudden return to practical danger.
