Taj Mahal Hotel

Shantaram

The Taj Mahal Hotel is remembered as the site from which Lin and Karla were rescued during a flood, and as the setting of a pivotal memory connecting their escape to Lin’s subsequent arrest. Its flooded forecourt holds both the exhilaration of their reunion and the ominous turn that followed when Madame Zhou’s servant watched them leave.

Setting and Flood Rescue

During the flood, Lin and others crossed the hotel’s flooded forecourt in a canoe, passing beneath the resonant dome of the Gateway Monument. In a separate recollection of the same night, Lin recalls that Karla was rescued from the Taj Mahal Hotel in Vinod’s boat. The hotel thus belongs to a scene of movement through inundated Bombay: its forecourt became a passage out of danger, rather than simply a place of shelter.

A Memory of Love and Loss

Later, as fishing canoes passed near the slum, the sight of the water brought the storm night back to Lin. The recollection gathered together the canoe journey, Vinod’s love song, and Karla coming into his arms. That moment of closeness stands against the losses Lin associates with the time since the storm: imprisonment and torture, Karla’s departure, and the deaths or presumed deaths of friends and allies. The hotel’s significance is therefore carried not by an account of its ordinary use, but by the remembered night that became a measure of everything subsequently lost.

The Rescue and Its Consequences

On the day Karla was taken from the hotel, Rajan, Madame Zhou’s eunuch servant, watched Lin with her and saw them leave in a taxi. Lin later connected Rajan’s hostile attention to the police arrest that night and the torture that followed. He understood Madame Zhou’s betrayal as punishment for defying her, impersonating an American consular officer, taking Lisa Carter away, and possibly loving Karla. The rescue at the hotel consequently acquires a double significance: it brings Karla into Lin’s arms, but also marks the moment whose aftermath leads him toward imprisonment and a desire for revenge.
