Dongri
ShantaramDongri is the setting of a private meeting between Lin and Abdel Khader Khan, bringing the practical business of the passport operation into the same room as Khader’s philosophical teaching. The mansion becomes a place where Lin reports on his work and demonstrates that he has understood Khader’s ideas.
The Mansion and Its Interior
Lin visits Abdel Khader Khan at his Dongri mansion to report on changes he has recommended and begun implementing in the passport factory run by Abdel Ghani. During their conversation, Khader sits in a white cane armchair beside a fountain whose plumes splash playfully. The room’s composed intimacy frames an exchange that moves from business to Khader’s favourite subjects: good and evil, and the purpose of life.
Business and Philosophy
The meeting takes place a week before Lin recalls it while riding to see Lisa on the day of Didier’s confession. Lin’s report describes an expanded package of identity documents, including driver’s licences, bank accounts, credit cards, and sports-club memberships; Abdel Ghani has approved and supported the changes, and Khader is pleased with their progress. The report gives way to a discussion in which Khader asks Lin to restate the argument: the universe moves toward increasing complexity, and actions that advance that movement are good, while those that hinder it are evil. Dongri thus anchors both an organizational development in Khader’s criminal enterprise and a lesson Lin later carries with him in memory.
