Panjim
ShantaramPanjim, the capital of Goa, is the first mainland stop in Lin’s search for Karla. At dawn, after a night crossing by ferry, he arrives in the city and wastes no time: he is the first passenger to board a bus to Mapusa, beginning the journey that will take him farther north in Goa.
Arrival and onward journey
Panjim functions as a threshold rather than a destination in this episode. The ferry docks there as night gives way to morning; Lin’s search then moves immediately onto the road. The bus covers the fifteen kilometres to Mapusa through leafy groves and past mansions shaped by four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule.
Narrative role
The brief stop in Panjim marks a decisive transition from waiting and uncertainty to purposeful movement. Lin has been urged to look for Karla in Goa, and the dawn arrival makes that search concrete: he boards the first bus, then continues from Mapusa toward the beaches on a rented motorcycle. The city’s significance here lies in this handoff between sea and road, and between the promise of finding Karla and the journey to seek her.
