after the laugh on the Pont des Arts
Clamence's Post-Laugh Decline
Following the mysterious laugh, Clamence's life begins to deteriorate. He avoids the Paris quays, experiences health problems and a general dejection, and finds it difficult to recover his good spirits. He starts to remember past events, including the motorcycle incident and his treatment of women, which reveal his deep-seated vanity and selfishness. He realizes that his entire life has been a performance, driven by a desire for admiration and power, and that he is not the simple, virtuous man he believed himself to be.
