The Motorcycle Confrontation

Clamence recalls a humiliating incident where he was involved in a traffic altercation with a motorcyclist. After a polite exchange turned hostile, Clamence got out of his car to fight, but a bystander intervened, and the motorcyclist struck him and fled. Clamence, dazed and under pressure from honking horns, returned to his car without retaliating, feeling publicly shamed.
